Cries of joy accompanied the chants of pride the night of the victorious first varsity football game of the year, but the sounds of support may be under scrutiny as the Bobcat administration aims to change the spirit of the masses for the better.
In an attempt to improve the spirit of the student body, administration has taken to reignite “Champions Compete with Class.” Intended to encourage athletes to be champions who compete at their highest level, the concept also includes promoting all Bobcats to treat others with respect and dignity. This means discouraging chants like “scoreboard,” “Taco Bell” and “daddy’s money” and booing at all sports games.
“We want students to be doing the right thing,” said assistant principal Dr. Bill Tommaney, the voice of the three C’s. “If we whooped a team 41 to zero, what else is there to say? We whooped ’em.”
Administration is striving to encourage classy spirit. Instead of booing the opposing team, shake their hands and congratulate them on a good game. They also want to prevent new trends from launching, such as the Cy Woods slogan, “Woods may have money, but Fair has swag”.
And even the spirit representatives of the school, cheerleaders, agree with the three C’s.
“It’s not classy to disrespect others,” said junior Varsity Lindsay Baker said. “Booing is just mean and un-classy. We have plenty of other ways to spirited school.”
This mentality, though, is the very idea that the three C’s is trying to challenge.
“Sometimes, you need to question the status quo,” Dr. Tommaney said. “Just because things have always been a certain way, doesn’t make it always right. Let’s treat others like we want to be treated and show the class of BFND.”
Principal Michael Smith also advocates the shift in school spirit.
“We want to be a good example for our community,” Smith said. “One of our oldest traditions here at Cy-Fair is BFND: Bobcat Fight Never Dies. This is a tradition of perseverance and spirit that echoes in all areas of Cy-Fair. I do not believe Bobcats have to put others down in order to have school spirit. I love school spirit. So let’s enjoy the games and have fun, as long as it’s appropriate.”
