Oct. 16, 2019—Cy-Fair High School junior running back L.J. Johnson Jr. was recently named the Fox 26 Greater Houston Honda Football Player of the Week following an outstanding performance to help the Bobcats capture a win over Cypress Falls High School on Oct. 4.

Johnson finished with 245 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 25 carries. It included an 89-yard score on the first play of the third quarter that seemed to happen in an instant, surprising even Johnson himself.

“It was a blur to me because it was right after halftime,” he said. “I just got the ball and next thing I know, it’s an open field and so I just kept running. Our [offensive] line does a good job blocking.”

His performance helped Cy-Fair win the game, 37-20, and the Bobcats have since added one more victory to their undefeated season (6-0) and lead in District 17-6A. It also earned him the weekly honor by Fox 26, as reporter Nate Griffin came to Cy-Fair on Oct. 9 to deliver the news and a plaque to Johnson before practice. Johnson stood with his varsity teammates during the presentation and even had the chance to introduce the offensive line, tight ends and fullback during the interview.

“It felt great to get this award because it feels great to know people are watching and taking recognition of what I do,” Johnson said. “But, I want to give this to my team and my whole line for helping me get this award.”

Johnson’s teammates think highly of him.

“This describes his character a lot,” Cy-Fair junior quarterback Carter Cravens said. “He’s very selfless and to give the credit to the offensive line is fair because they played well. He made us look good in the game.”

Added senior Anthony Rigas: “As an offensive lineman, we go very unrecognized. It was cool to see a guy who usually gets all the credit as running back shout us out.”
